Mobilizing the subsurface in the context of ecological transition presupposes redefining practices, uses, representations, values and policies related to the subsurface that were largely associated with extractivism.
In this context, the VERTIQUAL project of the Subsurface, Common Good PEPR brings together researchers in history, political science, communication and information sciences, geography, anthropology, and sociology of science and technology to observe whether and how this environment becomes politicized and is or is not subject to redefinitions.
It aims to identify how subsurface requalification processes involve or not a redefinition of sociotechnical heritages (know-how, expertise, ...), policies relating to subsurface uses, or even actor repositioning.
It will notably allow:
- To establish a mapping of different actors and discourses mobilized around French subsurface issues;
- To better grasp controversies and their specificities;
- To understand actor repositioning dynamics.
The VERTIQUAL project also plans production of a manifesto, in connection with targeted projects ANTICIP and JPEC of the Subsurface PEPR, on what thinking of the subsurface as a common good implies.
6 partners mobilized for 58 months
The VERTIQUAL project is coordinated by Sébastien Chailleux (Sciences Po Bordeaux), and associates BRGM, the Centre de Recherches Historiques of EHESS, the Centre Alexandre Koyré of EHESS, INRAE and the University of Strasbourg.
Project members met on April 3, 2024 at Sciences Po Bordeaux to officially launch the project and exchange on initial research work to be conducted.
